The Joy of Candy

By Asa Leveaux

Hello Genius,

I hope you are doing well today and pursuing your passions with EVERYTHING you have. I have been thinking about partnerships lately as different business opportunities are sent to me and while I coach entrepreneurs on their strategies. Going into business with someone is a serious thing! I would even go as far as saying that you are in a sense marrying this person if you choose to align yourself with another person in business. When I was around the age of 10 I decided to go into business, the candy business that is. At that time in my life I attended church literally every day of my life and was accompanied by other kids as well who were also being “trained in the way they should go”. I saw that everyone also wanted sweets during church service so I saw an opportunity. There was a pretty cocoa complected girl my age who like my idea and my first partnership was christened. I received venture capital from my parents and through my research  of asking the other kids what they would pay my prices were set with a nominal profit margin. For the first few weeks everything was AWESOME! I even considered, at the tender age of 10, if I could set up shop at another church. To my surprise my pretty partner was not very diligent in protecting the investment and was able to “lose” the candy and I was bankrupt, emotionally and financially. This candy business has played a big portion in my life in regards to what can happen when partnerships are formed. There are ways to mitigate the risk however. Whether your bliss is candy or clothes, due diligence is key!
