Tonight I am contacting you from Baltimore, MD where I am one of the speakers for a wonderful event that will reach thousands called 72 Hours of Power (www.72hoursofpower.com). On my flight this afternoon I sat comfortable between two people with ideas floating around my cranium that would effect the lives of the people that I would soon meet as well as my lunch from an eatery in the terminal. Once I placed my check-in under the seat in front of me, secured the book that would comfort me on the flight and fastened my seat belt I began to eat. Unexpectedly, the man next to me surprise me by the first thing that came out of his mouth, “How about I get some of those nuggets”? I kindly responded, “no”. I was initially shocked with myself for giving that response because the life that I have built does not require me to say no often. There wasn’t much time for reflection because the gentleman actually persisted that I allow him what was mine because “he knew I was raised right and should honor my moma’s teaching”.
As entrepreneurs, change agents and individuals who have a passion to impact the world we come into contact with people that want to be apart or take advantage of our mission. It is imperative that we give clear and concise responses even when the answer isn’t a yes. Here are some ways that you can learn to to use the power of “no” in your daily life.
1. Have Standards: When you have standards then everything is not looked at as an opportunity
2. Act Urgently: A “no” does not get better the longer you wait
3. Don’t Explain: The word “no” is a complete sentence and does not need further explanation
You can do this! May the force be with you
